How the score works
Methods note: the score starts at 100 and subtracts penalties for four factors at your ZIP right now: heat index computed from temperature and humidity (penalties begin at a heat index of 85 and grow steeply past 95, with cold penalties taking over below 56), UV index (penalties from 3 upward), precipitation probability (penalties from 20 percent upward), and wind (penalties from 10 mph upward). The bands: 85 to 100 is Great, 60 to 84 is Playable, 35 to 59 is Caution, and 0 to 34 is Court's closed, be honest. A falling barometer, at least 2.0 hPa below its reading three hours ago, adds the joints line some players will recognize on sight.
The advice lines come from fixed templates keyed to whichever factors cost you the most points. Data refreshes every 15 minutes while the tab stays open, matching the server's cache, and the geocoding runs on your ZIP alone; no location permission, no account, nothing stored about you.
Reading the score like a local
Great means go; the weather is not your opponent today. Playable is most mornings in most places: fine conditions with one factor worth managing, and the advice lines name it. Caution is the honest middle, playable for a disciplined session with real hydration and shade habits, and a fair day to swap games for drills. Court's closed, be honest is exactly what it sounds like; the sport will still exist tomorrow.
The score reads conditions right now, not the whole day. A Caution at noon is often a Great at 7 am, which is the single most useful trade in hot-climate pickleball: same courts, same partners, different hour, different sport. Cold-climate players get the mirror advice, since the cold penalties reflect stiff muscles that tear more easily; the fix is indoors or a doubled warm up, not toughness.
Playing in heat and sun anyway
This section stands on its own when the live feed is down. Hydration honesty first: thirst runs behind need, so drink before games and at every changeover, not once you feel dry. Shade timing matters more than toughness, rest in shade between games, and on brutal days play early morning or evening and let midday belong to the sun. Players in real humidity, the Keys in summer being the textbook case, can run the numbers the local way too: Key West Sports Medicine's Keys heat bands and Heat Safety Advisor use the same heat index logic with thresholds tuned for that air.
UV basics: sunscreen before the first game, reapplied at the changeover, a brim hat, and sunglasses or, better, the rated eyewear that also stops a ball. The changeover habit is the whole trick, tie water, shade, and reapplication to changeovers and nothing gets skipped.
One thing no weather feed measures: the court itself. Dark acrylic over asphalt soaks up sun all day and radiates it back through the afternoon, so the air temperature the score reads understates what your feet and your dog would report at 3 pm. On sunny days, add a mental point or two of caution to any afternoon score, and touch the court surface before the kids play barefoot warmups.
Humidity is the factor players underrate, which is why the score uses heat index instead of raw temperature: sweat that cannot evaporate does not cool you, so a humid morning can outdo a hotter dry afternoon. When the joints line appears, falling barometric pressure, treat it as a nudge toward a longer warm up rather than a forecast of doom; some knees and hands notice weather, and the warm up is the response that costs nothing.
And know when to call it: cramping, headache, nausea, or the chills in the heat are a medical exit, not a hydration challenge. The prevention hub covers the rest of the kit. Hurt instead of hot? The readiness check is the tool you want.
